Donovan McNabb: Cowboys would be better off without Tony Romo, Dez Bryant

After watching the Dallas Cowboys surge while Dez Bryant has been out with a knee injury and Dak Prescott has filled in brilliantly for Tony Romo, Donovan McNabb believes the franchise should trade the two superstars.

He floated the question on Sunday night after the ‘Boys took down the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

Then Monday morning, he elaborated on the idea speaking with Mike & Mike on ESPN.

McNabb argued that Dallas would be better off going forward without Romo or Bryant. He said the team has already begun to follow its young leaders — Prescott and running back Ezekiell Elliott.

He also made it clear that he believes Bryant has become more of a distraction than a productive member of the team. He cited Bryant’s recent immature move to avoid getting treatment and an MRI on his knee. He also pointed to the recent report that indicted the receiver had missed or been late to up to 40 team meetings since his arrival in Dallas (more on that here).

Then McNabb finished by looking back at what the New England Patriots did with Tom Brady and Drew Bledsoe, letting the young gun run the show and dumping the veteran soon after. This is actually something Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones has alluded to recently, noting the current situation was not unlike what happened in New England.

On the surface, it’s easy to have the gut reaction that McNabb is just throwing a hot take out there for debate.

It’s just crazy talk, right?

But looking at this situation, it’s not crazy to come to the conclusion that the Cowboys might be better off dumping both Romo and Bryant to let their young players develop.

Romo hasn’t been able to stay healthy since 2013 when he suffered a herniated disc, requiring surgery. In each of his four seasons since then, the veteran has been set back by injuries, and we’ve come to the conclusion that retirement might be in his best interest health-wise going forward.

Regardless, Romo shouldn’t be allowed to supplant the rookie at this point — Prescott has just been too darn good.

Not only that, but the Cowboys are rolling. Chemistry is an invaluable commodity in then NFL. When you have it, the worst thing you can do is tinker with what is working. Throwing Romo into the mix and benching Prescott could be a catastrophic move in hindsight.

As for Bryant, it’s true that he’s one of the most dynamic receivers in the NFL when healthy. But he hasn’t been healthy since 2014. Furthermore, he continues to attract drama, even now in his seventh year.

So, while it might seem crazy to consider the Cowboys moving on from both of these stars, it might just be the best idea out there for the future of the franchise.
