Dolphins already souring on Mario Williams?

This didn’t take too long. Fresh off an ugly divorce from the Buffalo Bills this past spring, defensive end Mario Williams isn’t doing too much to change the perception he has earned around the league.

The first-year Miami Dolphins pass rusher is already being called out by defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, just five games into his career in South Beach.

“He’s got to play harder; he’s got to play better,” Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said, via ESPN. “Obviously, he’s being allowed to rush the passer. But the games we’ve been in, it’s been more run-first, pass-second games. So for us to be a great rushing team, we have to earn the right. … If they want to rush more, stop the run more consistently.”

Production-wise, Joseph is not wrong here. Williams has recorded a grand total of seven tackles and one sack in five games. That’s a far cry from his double-digit sack performances with the Buffalo Bills earlier this decade.

It also speaks to a potential disconnect between Williams and his new coaches. As we saw towards the end of Williams’ career with the Bills, issues seemed to come to the forefront regarding his unwillingness to do anything outside of rush the quarterback (more on that here).

One has to wonder how Williams will take this latest criticism. In the past, he’s decided to play the role of an immature brat. Should that continue here, the Dolphins might have no other choice but to limit his playing time or release him altogether.

Joseph’s comments on Thursday shed some light on the thought process within the coaching staff.
