Stephen Curry: ’74 isn’t really a goal,’ championship all that matters

The Golden State Warriors set an NBA record for most wins in a season last year, but Stephen Curry couldn’t care less about one-upping their feat.

Speaking with media during his Under Armour-sponsored Asian tour, Curry made it clear the Warriors are shooting for only one goal this upcoming season.

“74 [wins] isn’t really a goal,” Curry said. “…all of our energy will be spent on getting ourselves ready for a championship run.”

After last year’s heartbreaking collapse against the Cleveland Cavaliers, it’s easy to understand where Curry is coming from.

Many people wonderGed if the chase for 73 would ultimately doom the Warriors (we did).

And after going up 3-1 in the NBA Finals it certainly appeared Golden State simply lacked the energy to complete the race.

Given the amount of competitive basketball many of these top players are committed to these days, it stands to reason that fatigue would set in after playing so hard for so long to win that many games.

It will be interesting to see if head coach Steve Kerr adopts a Gregg Popovichian philosophy going forward, resting his top guys every now and again. That strategy worked out well for the San Antonio Spurs during Tim Duncan’s illustrious career. It might just be the ticket to multiple titles for the Warriors as well.
