Saints safety on Drew Brees: ‘I want him to pass up Tom Brady’

Kenny Vaccaro

Kenny Vaccaro is motivated. On Wednesday, the New Orleans Saints’ safety told Nick Underhill of The Advocate that he wants to see his quarterback — Drew Brees — win at least four more rings.

Vaccaro certainly knows how how to set lofty goals for himself and his team. Unfortunately, these particular goals aren’t terribly realistic.

Brady has four rings. Brees has one. So, the Saints would have to win four more Super Bowls for their Hall of Fame quarterback to pass New England’s. Brees, who is 37, probably doesn’t have many more years than that left in the NFL.

Additionally, the New England Patriots have played in five straight AFC Championship Games. In 2016, they sit at 3-0 and Brady hasn’t even played yet. While difficult to achieve, another Super Bowl win would not be shocking.

Meanwhile, the Saints sit at 0-3. The defense that Vaccaro is a part of hasn’t shown itself capable of making the stops needed to win a single game, let alone a Super Bowl.

From a big picture perspective, New Orleans hasn’t made the playoffs since 2013 and hasn’t gotten beyond the divisional round since winning the Super Bowl in 2009.

At this point, the more realistic goal would be to get Brees one more ring before he has to retire. Once that is achieved, then Vaccaro and the Saints can turn their attention towards bettering Brady’s championship total.

Until then, some focus on improving the league’s worst defense might make more sense.
