Report: ‘Slim’ chance J.J. Watt returns to the Texans this season

The Houston Texans were dealt a major blow when they had to place three-time Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt on injured reserve earlier this week.

Watt, who underwent off-season back surgery, apparently rushed himself back from the injury in order to take the field on opening day. No one knows whether this played a role in the injury itself popping back up again, but it sure didn’t help.

Now facing the prospect of missing Watt for at least the next two months, it’s being reported that chances are “slim” the Texans will get Watt back this season.

That has to be expected. When it comes to an injury of this ilk, the primary focus has to be on a players’ long-term health and ability to contribute down the road.

While some will surely question whether the Texans should have let Watt back on the field before he was 100 percent, it sure looks like the team isn’t willing to take a chance on his ability to make an impact over the long term.

With Watt sidelined, the 2-1 Texans need pass rushers Whitney Mercilus and Jadeveon Clowney to step up in his stead. Should that not happen, the team will be in trouble as the season progresses.

As Texans head coach Bill O’Brien recently indicated, you can’t replace the best player in football.

Unfortunately, that’s the task Houston finds itself in heading into Week 4.
