Report: Cowboys expected to sign Mark Sanchez

After being released by the Denver Broncos, Mark Sanchez is expected to sign with the Dallas Cowboys.

This is purely for insurance purposes.

Dak Prescott is going to start for Dallas, but at least the Cowboys will have a backup in place if he either struggles badly or gets injured.

The Cowboys had been in contact with the Broncos about a potential trade, but they did not want to pay his $4.5 million salary. Now they will certainly pay less following his release from Denver.

Dallas lost Tony Romo for an extended period of time when he broke a bone in his back. The latest reports indicate he could miss between eight and 10 weeks (more on that here).

Prescott has been phenomenal for the Cowboys this preseason. He was the most impressive quarterback of any team around the league during the exhibition games. But regular-season action is much different, and fans should temper their expectations somewhat.

That said, the Cowboys and their fans will be praying nothing happens to Prescott. If Sanchez — the turnover-prone veteran best known for his infamous butt-fumble — has to play this year for Dallas, then it’s going to be about as pretty as last year’s debacle when Romo went down.
