Ray Lewis to Colin Kaepernick: ‘Take the flag out of it’

Colin Kaepernick

Former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis is never one to remain quiet on the biggest topics of the day.

His past might make it difficult for some to take him seriously, but here’s a guy that acted as a leader and an inspiration to his countless teammates during a career that will soon culminate in a trip to Canton.

It’s in this that people around the football world pay attention to Lewis’ words. The 13-time Pro Bowler just recently touched on the latest controversy surrounding professional football.

“My only advice to Colin Kaepernick is this: Listen, I understand what you’re trying to do,” Lewis said. “But understand, take the flag out of it.”

There are a lot of people out there that support Kaepernick’s right to protest. Some of these same people have issues with the platform he’s used to protest perceived injustices in the United States.

For his part, the 49ers’ backup quarterback has indicated that he will continue to remain seated while the national anthem is being performed during the regular season.

He’s also been joined by other NFL players in doing the exact same thing (more on that here).

With Week 1 of the NFL season largely taking place on the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, it’s going to be interesting to see how any protest will be received.

For Lewis, it’s readily apparent that he doesn’t want the flag itself involved.
