Michigan is now all-time winningest program in college football history

With a win Saturday over Penn State coupled with a Notre Dame loss to Duke, Michigan is the all-time winningest program in college football history.

Zach Shaw of 247 Sports breaks down the record for us:

“With a historical record of 929-331-36, the Wolverines (4-0 in 2016) have a winning percentage of .7324. The Fighting Irish (1-3), meanwhile, are 893-316-42 for a winning percentage of .7323. The difference is minuscule, but the magnitude is large for both historical programs.”

Based on the directions both programs are headed this year, the minuscule difference between them on this list will widen before the year is out. Michigan is one of the nation’s top teams, while Notre Dame is sliding off the face of the map, respectively.

That said, this record might be short-lived. Michigan has a monumental Big Ten matchup with Wisconsin upcoming next weekend, while Notre Dame has Syracuse on tap. Should the Irish win and the Wolverines lose next weekend, the record will switch back in favor of Notre Dame, at least for one week.
