LeSean McCoy: ‘Simplified’ offense under Anthony Lynn

After putting up nearly 400 total yards and 31 points against the New York Jets last week, Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman was fired.

It represented a curious decision for a fledgling Bills organization that has not earned a playoff spot since 1999. This is magnified by the fact that Buffalo’s defense yielded nearly 500 yards in its loss to the Jets.

Now, with former running backs coach Anthony Lynn calling the plays in Buffalo, it’s going to be interesting to see if the offense progresses.

At the very least, we now know the offense will be a bit less convoluted under Lynn than it was when Roman found himself calling the shots.

“There won’t be a drastic change, but there will be a difference,” running back LeSean McCoy said Thursday, via The Buffalo News. “The plays will be simplified a lot.”

The report goes on to indicate that Buffalo utilized a playbook that included 80-90 plays in a given week under Roman. That’s now been narrowed to 30 or 40.

It’s an interesting to change. That’s for sure. If the offense itself is simplified for the Bills’ offense, doesn’t that mean the same will ring true for opposing defenses?

We saw the San Francisco 49ers struggle after moving on from Roman’s complex playbook last season. It most definitely wasn’t a pretty sight.

Only time will tell with the Bills.

Buffalo hosts the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday looking for its first win of the season.
