Josh Boutte suspended one game by Les Miles for dirty hit

LSU offensive lineman Josh Boutte has been suspended one game by Les Miles for his dirty hit at the end of the game against Wisconsin.

Boutte absolutely drilled Wisconsin’s D’Cota Dixon after Wisconsin quarterback Brandon Harris threw a bad interception.

The defensive back caught the ball going down to the ground, ending the play. But when he celebrated by running with his teammates, Boutte leveled him in what was one of the dirtiest plays we’ve seen in a long time (watch here).

Boutte was ejected for his conduct.

After the game, Miles defended his player.

“I grabbed him right away when it happened, I’ll have to see the film,” Miles said, via The Times Picayune. He’s an offensive lineman in protection. What happens downfield many times, you can be protecting beyond the play with the idea you don’t know if the ball is even thrown.”

Miles also said it was “very logical” to assume Boutte didn’t know the play was over.

But after review, the LSU head coach really had no other recourse than to suspend his player. There is no defending what Josh Boutte did. Even if the play was live, the manner in which he hit Dixon was grounds for ejection.

At this point, the only thing left to argue is whether or not one game was punishment enough for Boutte’s dirty hit.
