Jimmy Garoppolo listed as doubtful, unlikely to play Thursday

We might be in for a treat Thursday night when the New England Patrots travel to Houston to take on the Texans.

The team officially listed Jimmy Garoppolo as doubtful for the game with a shoulder injury. Based on precedence, this means he’s unlikely going to be able to take the field.

It also means that rookie third-round pick Jacoby Brissett will be making his first NFL start. Barring a last-minute signing of a veteran backup (not happening), wide receiver Julian Edelman will be second in line at quarterback should Brissett prove ineffective or finds himself injured.

How fun is that?

In reality, this isn’t a joking matter for New England. Despite a 2-0 record to start the season, quarterback has become a major question mark.

Prior to going down last week, Garoppolo was performing at an elite level while filling in for a suspended Tom Brady. Should this injury prove to be more serious than first imagined, the Pats are likely going to have to find themselves a veteran backup here soon.

As it is, Thursday’s game between two undefeated AFC contenders should be fun. Whether that means Brissett will be up to the task against J.J. Watt and Co. remains to be seen.
