Jacob deGrom officially shut down, will require surgery

The New York Mets will officially be without Jacob deGrom for the remainder of the season. MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported the news. The Mets’ ace will undergo surgery, bringing his 2016 to a close.

This is hardly surprising. Recent news indicated that this was likely, and New York has been without deGrom since September 1.

It’s hard to think that the loss of deGrom won’t hurt the Mets at some point. With that said, New York should continue on its path to the playoffs.

The Mets need to only beat one of the the San Francisco Giants and St. Louis Cardinals to make the playoffs. Given that New York is ahead of both teams and playing much better than both, it’s hard to see the Giants and Cardinals keeping the Mets from the wild card.

That’s where things get trickier, though.

It’s hard to win in the playoffs without pitching depth. New York does have Noah Syndergaard, but is already without Matt Harvey and now deGrom. Throw in the uncertainty of Steven Matz’s health, and a long playoff run seems even more unlikely.

The right hander finished the season posting a 7-8 record with a 3.04 ERA and 1.20 WHIP while striking out nearly a batter per inning.
