Jacob deGrom has elbow injury, likely needs surgery

The New York Mets were dealt a severe blow on Saturday when the team announced starting pitcher Jacob deGrom has an elbow injury that will likely require surgery.

Unfortunately, the news itself doesn’t seem to get any better when we look into the details.

“I actually watched Jake’s bullpen yesterday and it was outstanding,” Mets manager Terry Collins said on Saturday, via the NY Daily News. “Fifteen minutes later he said ‘I can’t pitch.'”

deGrom, 28, was pitching to a 7-8 record with a 3.04 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 24 starts on the year. He’s obviously done for the remainder of the season.

It remains to be seen what the extent of the injury is, but this most definitely isn’t good news either short term or long term for the Mets. In addition to deGrom, Matt Harvey is also lost for the year.

The team entered Saturday’s slate tied with the San Francisco Giants for first place in the wild card race.
