Report: Giants to work out S Donte Whitner

The New York Giants, desperate for help at safety, will reportedly bring in veteran Donte Whitner for a work out on Sunday.

Faced with taking on the Minnesota Vikings on Monday night, the Giants currently have just two healthy safeties. Nat Berhe is in the concussion protocol and Darian Thompson has a foot injury that could keep him out for a couple more weeks.

Big Blue could do a lot worse than Whitner.

He played for the Buffalo Bills for five years before signing with the San Francisco 49ers in 2011. A standout in Vic Fangio’s defense while with San Francisco, he left in 2014 to play two years in Cleveland before being released in April as part of the Moneyball strategy that now guides the seemingly cursed franchise.

A three-time Pro Bowler and one-time 2nd-Team All-Pro safety, Whitner’s best days are behind him at the age of 31. That said, his experience and ability to make big plays could make him an attractive short-term solution for the Giants at this time.
