Doug Pederson compares Carson Wentz to Peyton Manning

Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz

Through three games, it’s clear Philadlephia Eagles rookie quarterback Carson Wentz is a burgeoning star. Nobody can deny it.

But being that it’s only been three games, it’s a bit early to throw the hype train into hyperspace. However, this is what head coach Doug Pederson did on Monday when he compared his young pupil to one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

Of course, this is exactly the same type of thing UCLA head coach Jim Mora has already said about young Josh Rosen (more on that here).

It’s also the same thing anyone ever says when describing a young quarterback who spends countless hours in the film room.

The comparisons that get thrown out so frivolously these days aren’t fair to young quarterbacks, and they dilute the legendary accomplishments of guys like Manning or Tom Brady.

That Wentz has been one of the most impressive quarterbacks in the NFL through three weeks is an undeniable truth. He has been spectacular.

And nobody will argue with Pederson, who’s with him all the time, about the young man’s work ethic and drive. But let’s let the kid play an entire season or two before name-dropping Peyton Manning as his nearest comparison, okay?

After all, Robert Griffin III was also amazing during his first three games. Heck, he was amazing for an entire year. But we all know what happened after that.

If that isn’t a cautionary tale, then nothing is.
