Report: Bill O’Brien taking play-calling duties away from Texans OC

Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien is taking play-calling duties away from offensive coordinator George Godsey and will be calling plays himself going forward.

After being shut out, 27-0, against the New England Patriots in Week 3, and given the early season struggles of Brock Osweiler, this makes sense to a certain degree.

Houston’s offense has been a disappointing mess.

Despite running a scheme that relies on plenty of short throws, Osweiler has completed less than 60 percent of his passes, is averaging a paltry 232 yards per game and has thrown three touchdowns compared to four interceptions.

Running back Lamar Miller has been getting the touches he desired, averaging nearly 25 rushing attempts per game heading into Week 4. Unfortunately, all those touches have yet to result in a touchdown, his long run is just 15 yards and he’s averaging 3.6 yards per carry.

The Texans rank No. 24 in total offense and are tied for last place in scoring offense. In short, Houston’s offense is quite stagnant right now, despite the heavy investments to bolster the unit, both in free agency and via the draft.

O’Brien knows it must improve, and fast.

If he cannot get his offense running smooth in the coming weeks, it’s going to be interesting to see how much patience Bob McNair and the Texans have.

Unfortunately for Bill O’Brien, the problems might boil down to the simple fact that Osweiler just isn’t a franchise passer. Though there is still time to disprove this theory, based on his work with the Denver Broncos last year and what we’ve seen so far, the $72 million man appears to be a bust.

At this point, the only guy who seems to be happy with Osweiler’s performance is John Elway.
