Ben Roethlisberger disgusted after loss: ‘We all stunk’

NFL Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger

Sunday’s big Pennsylvania showdown between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles ended up being a one-sided affair that left Ben Roethlisberger and Co. with a bitter taste in the mouth.

In every possible way, Philadelphia dominated Pittsburgh in the 34-3 loss — the worst loss in the Mike Tomlin era.

After the game, Roethlisberger summed up his team’s performance succinctly: “We stunk,’’ he said, per Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “We all stunk.”

Nobody played well on Pittsburgh’s side except for the effervescent Antonio Brown, who accounted for more than half of the team’s offensive output. He caught 12 passes for 140 yards.

The Steelers on the whole managed just 256 yards of offense and just 4.3 yards per play. They converted just 15 first downs and went four-of -11 on third downs.

Meanwhile, Carson Wentz and Co. carved up Pittsburgh’s defense like a Thanksgiving turkey, gaining 426 total yards and 25 first downs while dominating the time-of-possession battle.

It was total annihilation.

Head coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged that Philladelphia played well but didn’t sugarcoat his team’s atrocious performance.

“We lost just about every element of that matchup,’’ Tomlin said. “It was a poor performance by us. … I tip my cap to them but I acknowledge some areas that are showing a pattern of inconsistency or a pattern of undesirable performance.”

Now at 2-1 on the season, the Steelers have a week to prepare for what should be another tough battle at home against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 4.
