Report: Tony Romo could be placed on short-term IR

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

The Dallas Cowboys are currently deliberating whether or not to place Tony Romo on injured reserve with the designation to return, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

Should they deem his injury significant enough to warrant this course of action, then Romo would be out for at least the first six games of the NFL season.

It’s worth pointing out that there is a new rule in place that says teams no longer have to designate a single player for the short-term IR. Every player is simply on the IR, and they can choose one player to take off early to return in season.

Obviously, that one person would almost certainly be Romo, if he’s healthy.

That said, it’s not a given he will ever be fully healthy. It’s been reported that he might need epidural injections just to play this year.

Furthermore, Stephen Jones, executive V.P. for the Cowboys, hasn’t ruled out a potential Tom Brady/Drew Bledsoe situation developing with Dak Prescott playing the role of Brady in this scenario (more on that here).

At this time, Dallas is going to take it slow determining Romo’s fate. But clearly, there is nothing that isn’t on the table at this point.
