Report: Marlins to give Alex Rodriguez consideration after Giancarlo Stanton injury

The Miami Marlins will be without slugging outfielder Giancarlo Stanton for the remainder of the 2016 season. Stanton’s injury has reignited talks within the organization about signing Alex Rodriguez.

“Marlins executive Michael Hill told reporters minutes ago that he will give consideration to signing Alex Rodriguez, something has been discussed internally in recent days,” per Barry Jackson, Miami Herald. “If A-Rod plays first, that would free others (Derek Dietrich, Chris Johnson) to play some outfield.”

Jackson also cited positive comments from David Phelps, who played with Rodriguez with the New York Yankees. “They (people) don’t see the guy he is behind the scenes, in the clubhouse, helping guys develop.”

That may well be. But even if we take for granted that Rodriguez is a good clubhouse guy, this would make basically no sense, as Rodriguez has been awful all season. He’s slashing at .200/.247/.351 with only nine home runs.

If this was happening in June or early, July, maybe it would make sense. Then, there would be more than enough time to make up for it if Rodriguez didn’t perform well. But right now, there’s just not enough baseball left and the race is too tight. If Rodriguez struggles, the Marlins could dig too big of a hole for themselves.

As if all of that wasn’t enough, Rodriguez has played all of two games at first base in his career. In the National League, he can’t be hidden at DH. Expecting someone to learn a new position at 41 is a pretty tall order.

Rodriguez being from Miami may make this seem like a good fit. But in reality, it’s not a good idea from any other perspective. If the Marlins are looking to replace Stanton, they’d be better off trying to make a trade and hoping it clears waivers.
