Report: Dion Lewis expected to miss 8-10 weeks following surgery

The New England Patriots will be without Dion Lewis for a while. Still, they’ve received some good news. The running back is not expected to miss the entire season.

“Patriots running back Dion Lewis is expected to be out 8-10 weeks, according to an NFL source,” said Jason Cole of Bleacher Report. “There is no further damage to the ACL in his knee. New England does not have to use an IR Designated to Return spot on him because he’s on the Physically Unable to Perform list. So, the Patriots could keep him on the PUP list for 6-11 weeks of the regular season. There’s a good chance that he can still play at some point in 2016.”

There’s definitely plenty of positive to take away from that. Lewis was a big part of the New England attack last year. In the seven games he played during the 2015 season, Lewis had 49 carries for 234 yards on the ground and 36 catches for 388 yards through the air. He added four touchdowns (two rushing, two receiving) as well.

It will be great for the Patriots to have those contributions back in the lineup during the final stretch and (theoretically) the playoffs.

Of course, he’s still slated to miss roughly half of the season. During the 2015 regular season, New England was 7-0 in games where Lewis played and 5-4 when he didn’t suit up.

Without Tom Brady for four weeks, it will now be even more important for offensive weapons like Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola to stay healthy. Unfortunately, health has not always been an asset for those players.

It’s hard to imagine the Patriots having a truly bad year in 2016. Still, they’re in a more precarious position heading into the season than they’ve been in a while. The injury to Lewis is a big part of that.
