Report: Jets fielding calls for Geno Smith

Geno Smith

Geno Smith, as shocking as this may sound, actually could be a trade target for some quarterback-needy NFL teams in the near future.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports there has already been “soft interest” around the league in Smith.

“Smith is viewed in a much more favorable light around the league than he is by the green-and-white diehards, who seem hell bent on getting him out of town before the Sept. 11 season opener.

“There is soft interest around the league in Smith. The Jets have fielded inquiries from teams monitoring their surplus at several positions, including quarterback.”

Based on some of the injuries that have occurred around the NFL at the quarterback position, this shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.

One team that could potentially be looking for another quarterback is the Chicago Bears. They lost Connor Shaw for the season to a gruesome leg injury, and backup Brian Hoyer was also hurt in Week 3.

The San Francisco 49ers, who could reportedly cut Colin Kaepernick (more on that here), might be looking at Smith as well.

The Dallas Cowboys, who lost backup Kellen Moore for the season and now are potentially looking at playing half the season without Tony Romo, could also be in the market for another passer.

Smith hasn’t been good when given the opportunity to play in the NFL. He’s a career 58 percent passer who has thrown 12 more interceptions than touchdowns, and he’s shown a propensity to display attitude problems to boot.

But the simple truth is there just aren’t many excellent NFL quarterbacks available. And beggars cannot be choosers.

New York could legitimately feel Bryce Petty is a better backup at this point, and Smith could be the victim of final cuts. But don’t think for a second that he’s not tradeable. Teams are desperate right now, and Smith is still a young player with a spark of potential.
