Gary Kubiak: Paxton Lynch ‘really, really stepping up’ in practice

Paxton Lynch Broncos

Perhaps the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback job is legitimately a three-horse race, as head coach Gary Kubiak praised rookie Paxton Lynch Monday for taking huge positive strides.

No. 12 is really, really stepping up,” head coach Gary Kubiak said, per the team’s website. “He’s making some progress here.”

That he’s stepping up shouldn’t be a surprise to those who have been keeping track of Lynch this offseason. He has been extremely confident in himself, making it clear a few days ago that he feels he’s going to have a shot to start in Week 1, or at least early this season (more on that here).

The starting job was thought by many to be a two-quarterback competition between veteran Mark Sanchez and second-year pro Trevor Siemian.

Before camp began, it was reported that Sanchez was slightly ahead but that he’d have to earn it. Then came the first practice, and Sanchez was playing the same turnover-prone tune he’s been playing for years, opening the door for Siemian to impress.

But at this point it seems the Broncos have been more impressed by the rookie out of Memphis.

From a mental standpoint, Lynch has the biggest mountain to climb this summer to become the starting quarterback. But from a physical standpoint, he’s clearly the guy Denver would love to see win the job at some point, and that seems to be coming sooner than later.

John Elway said this spring that Lynch would be ready sooner than folks realized. It now appears he was absolutely correct.
