Chiefs place Justin Houston on physically unable to perform list

The Kansas City Chiefs will be without top pass rusher Justin Houston for the first six weeks of the season.

The team placed Houston on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Tuesday, guaranteeing that he will miss that time.

This all stems from an off-season surgery on Houston’s knee — a surgery that was originally reported to put his entire 2016 campaign in jeopardy (more on that here).

When on the field, Houston has been among the most-dominant EDGE rushers in the game. He racked up 7.5 sacks in 11 games last season. That came on the heels of the four-time Pro Bowler leading the NFL in quarterback take downs with 22 in 2014.

With Houston sidelined for at least the first six weeks of the season, Kansas City is going to be relying on former first-round pick Dee Ford to make a major impact.

Whether that happens is anyone’s guess. Ford has recorded just 5.5 sacks in two seasons.
