Buccaneers HC blasts rookie kicker Roberto Aguayo

Roberto Aguayo

When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected kicker Roberto Aguayo in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, the expectation was obviously that he’d be a stud.

Through the first two games of his NFL career, it’s safe to say he’s been quite a dud, and head coach Dirk Koetter isn’t amused about it.

Aguayo missed an extra point in his NFL debut, which was embarrassing enough.

He then shanked a chip-shot field goal from 32 yards out on the opening drive Saturday night (watch here).

Speaking to reporters during his post-game news conference, Koetter fired back after he was asked about the team’s “slow start” on offense.

“I wouldn’t call that a slow start,” Koetter said, via JoeBucsFan.com. “We gotta make the damn field goal.”

Aguayo also missed another field goal in the fourth quarter, this time from 49 yards out, finishing with two-of-four made on the day.

Then he was asked if he was worried about the rookie’s early mishaps.

“I wouldn’t say worried, but this is the NFL, man,” Koetter said. “They’re paid to make kicks. He knows it. I know it. Everybody knows it. So, I mean, it is what it is.”

Aguayo was a player Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht revealed was graded as a first-round talent by the club (more on that here).

Coming out of Florida State, he had never missed a single field-goal attempt from 39 yards or fewer and had never missed an extra point.

Needless to say, his on-field performance to this point hasn’t matched the team’s expectations. Furthermore, it has only bolstered the opinion of the many who contend taking a kicker in the second round is ridiculous.
