Washington GM injured hand punching wall after injury news

Scot McCloughan

Washington general manager Scot McCloughan arrived to the team’s training camp with his left hand wrapped up.

McCloughan’s injury can be blamed on emotion. After hearing that rookie wide receiver Josh Doctson injured his foot in OTAs back in June, McCloughan took out his frustration on a wall.

This is how the story went down, according to former Washington tight end Chris Cooley.

“I said, ‘What happened to your hand?'” Cooley related on ESPN 980, per Michael Phillips of richmond.com. “He said, when I found out about Doctson – which they thought was going to be much worse, the Doctson injury, apparently it isn’t going to be as bad – I punched the wall.”

Cooley’s reaction to McCloughan’s actions were quite priceless.

“I just thought, ‘I love you. I freaking love you, man. Everything he does. He cares so much about his guys, his players. It upset him.”

Thankfully, the X-rays on Doctson’s foot returned negative. Though an update at the end of June suggested Doctson could miss the first preseason game due to a lingering Achilles’ tendon injury.

McCloughan pointed at Doctson during Friday’s practice and joked that his hand injury was “this guy’s fault.”

Washington selected Doctson in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He is currently listed on the team’s PUP and situated as a backup to Pierre Garcon on the team’s depth chart.
