Texans GM: ‘We are disappointed’ in DeAndre Hopkins

Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins has opted to hold out for a new contract. But he not get what he wants, based on comments made by general manager Rick Smith.

After Hopkins’ decision to abstain from showing up to camp Saturday, Smith and the Texans released the following statement:

“We are disappointed DeAndre has elected not to report to training camp with the rest of his teammates. He has expressed his position regarding his contract status, and we have been clear with both he and his representatives of ours. Our focus is on the 2016 season and all of our collective efforts and attention will be centered on that endeavor.”

Translation: Hold out all you like, Hopkins. You’re not getting a new deal, especially not by using this tactic.

That Hopkins is frustrated about his contract is understandable. He is unquestionably one of the top young receivers in the game and has a proven track record of steady production already in his first three seasons.

Improving every year, he has accumulated 239 receptions for 3,533 yards and 19 touchdowns, despite playing with some questionable characters at the quarterback position.

Yet Hopkins is set to earn less than $1.5 million this upcoming season (not including his signing bonus), which ranks him as the 73rd-highest-paid receiver for 2016, per Spotrac.com.

It’s going to be interesting to see how long Hopkins holds out. The Texans laid down the law with their statement, and this isn’t an organization that has a track record of caving to contract demands.

There is no doubt Hopkins deserves more than he’s set to earn, but it seems clear Houston is not going to be bullied into making a deal.
