Report: Jamaal Charles’ workload won’t be limited if healthy

Jamaal Charles

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles should be a workhorse again in 2016, provided he is healthy and returns to form.

Coming off a season-ending ACL injury last year, many have wondered if the dynamic dual-threat back will be limited all all as he enters his ninth NFL season.

According to ESPN’s Adam Teicher, this will not be the case.

The Chiefs aren’t taking any chances with Charles as they open camp. He’s expected to remain sidelined from team activities early on as he continues to work on individual drills.

Head coach Andy Reid noted back in mid June that he’s encouraged by what he’s seen of Charles but that the team does not want to risk any potential setbacks.

“We’ll have to see with Jamaal,” Reid said, per Teicher on ESPN.com. “You don’t want to take any steps back. He had two good days here and then we’ll just see how he does at camp. We’re optimistic about the two days. But let’s not rush him. We know what he’s all about. Let’s get him back to where he feels good and whatever timetable that is or how much he practices there, we’ll see day by day.”

Charles injured his knee rather early last season in the middle of October. Now more than nine months removed from surgery, he should be good to go for the start of the regular season in September, barring a setback.

There is no reason to limit his workload at this point, provided he does still have his explosion and speed.

When healthy, there aren’t many running backs in the league that can hold a candle to what Charles can do, both in terms of running and catching the ball. A threat to take it to the house on any play, he’s averaged 5.5 yards per carry throughout his career and has scored 62 total touchdowns in eight seasons.

For fantasy football owners, this is tremendous news. Keep an eye out for updates, but as long as things continue down the current path, Charles should be considered one of the top fantasy running backs for the 2016 season.
