Report: Hakeem Nicks signing one-year deal with Saints

The New Orleans Saints have reached deep into the pool of available free agents, reportedly signing veteran receiver Hakeem Nicks to a one-year contract.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the news on Wednesday.

Nicks, 28, has been down quite the embattled path in the NFL. Other than recording a pair of 1,000-plus yard seasons and scoring 18 combined touchdowns in 2010-11, Nicks has been a disappointment.

An original first-round pick of the Giants in 2009, Nicks was released in 2013.

After an uneventful campaign with the Indianapolis Colts in 2014 when Nicks managed 405 yards and four touchdowns, he landed back with the Giants.

Barely a blip on the radar, Nicks participated in only six games and caught just seven passes on 14 targets this past season.

It is interesting that the Saints reached out to a receiver who has barely seen the football field in two years. It’s possible that rookie second-round pick Michael Thomas simply hasn’t proven himself worthy of snaps during the summer.

Nevertheless, should Nicks make the 53-man roster, he will likely fall somewhere below Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead on the Saints depth chart.
