Report: Celtics eye potential Blake Griffin trade

Blake Griffin

After adding Al Horford in free agency and picking up former CAL standout Jaylen Brown with the third pick in last month’s draft, the Boston Celtics already find themselves among the top contenders in the Eastern Conference.

Though, it’s becoming readily apparent that Boston has the bigger picture in mind. Acquiring assets up and down the roster has put the team in position to make a blockbuster deal.

Add in the plethora of picks this team has moving forward, and it will most definitely have an opportunity to pick up an elite-level talent in a trade at some point soon.

According to Sean Deveney of the Sporting News, that might come sooner rather than later.

Citing sources close to the situation, the NBA insider is reporting that the Celtics will make a major deal soon and are targeting Los Angeles Clippers power forward Blake Griffin.

This comes amid reports that the Celtics are in the best position of any team in the NBA as it relates to acquiring Russell Westbrook from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

As you can tell, Danny Ainge and Co. are looking to go big or go home here.

While Boston surely has the talent to be considered one of the top teams back east, it has been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.

Adding Horford to the mix surely does help, but the Celtics will need to bring in another upper-echelon player to really contend with the Cleveland Cavaliers moving forward.

Whether that’s Griffin, Westbrook or someone else remains to be seen. What we do know is that both of those stars seem to be available should the right trade come down the pike.

All this comes on the heels of the Celtics being a finalist for Kevin Durant’s services, a clear indication that the team is looking to make a splash.
