Report: J.T. Barrett lost full scholarship over summer for DWI

J.T. Barrett is a college football star who faces immense pressure in 2017

Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett was busted for driving under the influence last year. He was suspended for one game at the time, and now new information has emerged about further discipline the university imposed for his mistake.

While it may not seem like a harsh punishment, Barrett had to partially pay for two summer classes out of pocket after temporarily losing his full ride scholarship, per Bill Landis of Cleveland.com.

“It was something that I didn’t have a problem with,” Barrett said. “It was something I did to my family, my team and something that I had to take responsibility for.”

Barrett also participated in a three-day alcohol education program, after which he went to head coach Urban Meyer to plead that the program should be shared with the entire football program, per the report.

“He came to me and said, ‘Our team needs this,'” Meyer told cleveland.com “That’s the kind of guy he is.”

It sure seems like this is a kid that gets it. Making a mistake is one thing, and common. Taking drastic steps to ensure the mistake isn’t replicated is quite another, and seems to be in rare quantity these days.

Barrett was placed back on a full-ride scholarship for the fall and is expected to be the unquestioned starting quarterback for the Buckeyes this fall after spending last season in flux with Cardale Jones.
