Diamondbacks option Shelby Miller to Triple-A

Shelby MIller

The terrible season that Shelby Miller and the Arizona Diamondbacks are going through has gotten worse. The team announced on its website that Miller has been optioned to Triple-A.

The Diamondbacks gave up a lot to get Miller. The main asset was shortstop Dansby Swanson, who was the No. 1 pick in 2015’s MLB Draft. Swanson is having a nice year in the Atlanta Braves system.

Miller is not having anywhere near a good enough season to justify such a trade haul.

As a matter of fact, Miller’s 2016 season has been a disaster in nearly every possible way. Miller is 2-9 with a 7.14 ERA, 1.75 WHIP, and 5.69 FIP. Roughly translated. He’s been terrible for fans of old stats and new stats, alike.

Miller’s K rate of 6.5 per nine is mediocre, but not surprising. Even at his best, Miller has never been a big strikeout pitcher. What is surprising is the walk rate of 4.4 hitters per nine. A 1.47 strikeout-to-walk ratio is never going to get it done at the Major League level.

How long Miller will stay in Reno remains to be seen. To get back to the majors, Miller needs to excel in the minors. If he doesn’t, the Diamondbacks will be better off giving Miller’s innings to a prospect.
