Browns’ Hue Jackson on Josh Gordon: ‘Slate’s clean with me’

Josh Gordon

Embattled Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon got a reprieve to save his career when earlier in July commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated him back into the NFL.

Harboring no prejudices regarding Gordon’s past affairs — issues that led to multiple suspensions for violating the league’s substance abuse policy — head coach Hue Jackson had the following to say (via The Morning Journal).

“Slate’s clean with me.”

Gordon has returned to the Browns on a conditional basis. He is allowed to interact with the team while he sits out the first four games of the season on suspension.

The fact that Gordon accepted responsibly for his past lapses in judgement and made the effort to meet with Goodell made all the difference to the Browns. Per the report, Sashi Brown, the vice president of football operations, said that the Browns would not “have welcomed back Gordon” if he did not hold himself accountable.

At this point, it sounds like Gordon will have every opportunity to strengthen his standing with the team. He is undoubtedly the most-talented receiver on the Browns’ roster. Though, it will take some time for Gordon to get back up to the level he was at when he managed a league-leading 1,646 yards and nine touchdowns in 2013.

It is of the utmost importance for Gordon to stay clean and out of trouble. He likely won’t receive another opportunity to play in the NFL should he find himself in hot water off the field again.
