Broncos to give quarterbacks equal first-team reps in camp

In a complete switch from previous indications that the Denver Broncos quarterback competition existed of just two players, the team is now prepared to give its three signal callers equal opportunity to earn the gig.

Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak made that perfectly clear on Wednesday.

“The bottom line is, we’re going to give them equal reps and it’s an open competition,” the head coach said, per Jeff Legwold of ESPN. “We’ve got a plan … so we’ll get an equal look at all of them.”

This means that Mark Sanchez, Trevor Siemian and rookie Paxton Lynch will receive equal first-team reps when training camp gets going on Thursday.

It had previously been reported that Siemian and Sanchez were battling for first-team reps with Lynch acting as nothing more than a spectator.

Kubiak said that the team has no plans to set a “timetable” on its decision. He also indicated that the potential starter will be the quarterback who does the best job at “getting the ball to the right people” while cutting back on mistakes. Leadership skills are also important for the head coach.

Sanchez obviously has the most in-game NFL experience. Though, his track record is bumpy. Getting the ball to the right guy has also proven to be an issue. The former first-round pick has thrown 86 touchdowns compared to 84 interceptions throughout his career.

Siemian has yet to attempt a regular season pass in the NFL. Meanwhile, Lynch seems to be nothing more than a project at this point.
