Angels C.J. Cron out 6-8 weeks with broken left hand

A terrible Los Angeles Angels season got worse on Monday. According to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times, first baseman C.J. Cron will miss the next 6-8 weeks recovering from surgery on his broken left hand.

Cron has been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise dismal season for Los Angeles. He’s slashing at .278/.333/.475. Additionally, Cron’s 11 homers and 50 RBI are both third on the Halos, trailing only Mike Trout and Albert Pujols in each category.

Ji-man Choi will take Cron’s spot on the roster. Choi has briefly played with the Halos this year and has struggled. In Triple-A Salt Lake City, Choi thrived, hitting .327/.411/.485.

What the Angels will do if Choi doesn’t work out is anyone’s guess. This isn’t exactly an organization with a great deal of depth. If Choi struggles, Pujols will likely see some additional time at first base. Another option would be Jefry Marte, who’s shown occasional glimpses of pop in 38 games this year.

The good news is that given the Halos place in the standings, there is plenty of time to experiment. Los Angeles will be nowhere near the playoffs, so it can afford to deal with the growing pains of Choi, Marte, or anyone else.

Additionally, there is no need to rush Cron back. He’s only 26 and is likely a big part of the team’s future. The Angels would be wise to keep Cron out for closer to eight weeks than six, if not longer.
