Sammy Watkins admits ‘nobody knows’ when he’ll be healthy

Sammy Watkins

Sammy Watkins made a startling statement on Wednesday as it relates to his recently broken foot. He has no idea when he’ll be ready to play.

“This is an injury where you have to be really careful,” Watkins said, via Joe Buscaglia of ABC 7 in Buffalo. “The only thing that I can do is listen to the staff and take it slow, and just, really protect myself, and they’re going to protect me also. We’re just going to take the course with the injury. Nobody knows what timetable, what or when I’ll be back.”

This is a far cry from what he insinuated after word broke that he had a screw inserted during surgery. Watkins now is just hoping he can be ready for training camp.

He’s wearing a walking boot and has ditched his crutches, but at this point both he and the Buffalo Bills are being extremely careful to ensure his recovery goes off without a hitch. Feet are tricky and fickle, especially when they belong to athletes like Watkins who put so much torque on their bones, joints and muscles.

Buffalo needs Watkins ready to roll during the regular season to have any chance of competing for a playoff spot. He has caught 125 passes for 2,029 yards and 15 touchdowns the past two years and is developing into one of the game’s most exciting playmakers.

While it would be ideal for him to participate fully in training camp and preseason games with the first team, missing out on some or even all of that practice won’t doom him to a poor 2016 campaign. Already entering his third year, he should be able to reintegrate into the offense without too much trouble, whenever he’s able.
