The New York State Assembly overwhelmingly voted in favor to pass the daily fantasy sports bill, ruling that daily fantasy sports is not gambling.

As passed along by ESPN’s David Payne Purdum, New York’s assembly voted 91-22 in favor, though the bill does still have to pass the Senate.

Interestingly, the bill includes many gambling provisions, which is ironic considering the only way the bill can pass is if daily fantasy sports is deemed to not be gambling. Perhaps this is why the bill is seen as having longer odds to pass the Senate.

In the end, the love affair by the constituents of New York with daily fantasy sports is likely the main reason so many representatives voted in favor of this controversial bill.

In other daily fantasy news, the two giants FanDuel and DraftKings are reportedly in talks to merge into one company (more on that here). Instead of competing against one another unnecessarily, FanDuel would ultimately become a monopoly in America when it comes to providing fans with the opportunity to play this wildly popular sport.

Should the New York State Senate end up passing the fantasy sports bill, then it would be a huge boon to these two giants, which may soon become one.
