Craig Sager will join ESPN’s coverage of Game 6 of the NBA Finals

In an incredibly classy move by ESPN, the sports leader will include Turner Sports personality Craig Sager in its coverage of Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Thursday.

Sager, one of the most recognizable NBA media personalities out there, has been battling through yet another bout with cancer recently.

Sager will work with Doris Burke as a sideline reporter for the game, marking the first time in his legendary career that he’s covered an NBA Finals game.

Here’s more from ESPN’s press release.

“Craig is an iconic member of the NBA family who indelibly makes his mark on each and every broadcast,” ESPN executive vice president John Wildhack said in a statement. “I know our entire team is delighted to work with Craig for Game 6. We all agree his professional reputation is second-to-none.”

Sager has been going through chemotherapy since his Leukemia returned, and the prognosis really isn’t that good at this point. Having an ability to work a Finals game is obviously something the veteran broadcaster wanted to do.

“I’d like to thank Turner and ESPN for approaching me with this tremendous opportunity to be part of The Finals broadcast team,” said Sager. “I’ve been watching the series very closely and, while I do not want to distract in any way from the event itself, I look forward to being in the building for what will be an incredibly exciting Game 6. The NBA community is a very special one and this is a great honor.”

ESPN will also be presenting Sager with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYS in July, just another representation of how the sports community comes together to show respect for one of its own.

Sager will join Burke, Mark Jackson, Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Breen in calling the game in Cleveland.

A win by the Golden State Warriors will wrap up what has become an increasingly drama-filled matchup between the Warriors and Cavaliers.

The game is set to air at 6 pm ET on Thursday on ABC.
