Washington Redskins release Chris Culliver

After signing All Pro corner Josh Norman away from the Carolina Panthers last month, the Washington Redskins have released another high-priced defensive back.

Last year’s free-agent bust Chris Culliver was sent packing by the team on Monday:

Culliver, 27, signed a four-year, $32 million contract with $16 million guaranteed last March.

A former third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers, Culliver was limited to just six games in his only season with the Redskins due to myriad of injuries.

He underwent off-season knee surgery and is questionable to go for training camp.

This came on the heels of Culliver putting up two solid seasons to end his career in San Francisco, including a four-interception performance in 2014, his contract year.

After giving Norman a five-year, $75 million contract, Washington simply couldn’t justify having Culliver count nearly $9.3 million against the cap in 2016. The release comes with a $3.8 million cap hit.

If Culliver can show that he will be ready for Week 1, he will definitely draw some interest on the free-agent market.

He’s had a ton of previous success in the NFL, nearly performing at a Pro Bowl level in 2014.

Culliver’s physical play at the line of scrimmage will be attractive to teams that run a bump-and-run, press scheme.

It’s pure conjecture here, but I wouldn’t be surprised if San Francisco shows interest in its former corner. After all, the team was in on Norman last month.
