Vernon Adams likely signing with B.C. Lions in CFL

Vernon Adams Jr. appears resigned to sign with the B.C. Lions in the CFL (Canadian Football League) after failing to get signed on with the Washington Redskins this past weekend.

After failing to get drafted, he had previously tried out with the Seattle Seahawks, who went with Trevone Boykin instead.

Adams had said before trying out with Washington that he’d sign on with the Lions if he didn’t land a contract, ESPN’s John Keim reported Monday.

“I could be like a Warren Moon or Doug Flutie,” he said of former NFL quarterbacks who played in the CFL. “All I need is a chance. … If they can stop looking at my height and give me a chance they’d get a teammate with a lot of energy and a great leader.”

Height is likely an issue for Adams, who comes in at 5-foot-11 and weighs 195 pounds soaking wet. That said, that Adams can play is undeniable.

A graduate transfer out of Eastern Washington, he was electric when healthy last year playing for the Oregon Ducks. Appearing in 10 games, he passed for 2,643 yards with 26 touchdowns and just six interceptions, rushing for two more touchdowns.

He also played extremely well in the Shrine Game, completing six-of-nine passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns.

One NFL team that should give Adams a call before he heads to Canada is the San Francisco 49ers. He’s a perfect trigger man for Chip Kelly’s zone-read offense, and it’s not like Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick are inspiring a bunch of confidence. But that isn’t likely to happen, based on the fact that San Francisco selected Jeff Driskel in the sixth round.

Instead, Adams’ best shot may just be up in the Great White North. If he performs well, he might get another shot in the NFL at some point. It’s happened before, and he certainly has the right attitude to get he job done.
