A former World Series champion has decided to retire, as Chris Cotillo of SB Nation is reporting that Jonny Gomes has retired from baseball.
Gomes most recently played in Japan for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles. He finished the 2015 MLB season with the Kansas City Royals. Gomes was not on Kansas City’s playoff roster, but that did not stop him from delivering an epic speech at the team’s World Series Parade.
He was also a part of the Boston Red Sox World Series winning team in 2013, where Gomes made his mark on the field. Trailing 2-1 in the series and tied 1-1 in Game 4, Gomes delivered a three-run home run that stood as the game winner. Boston would not only win all of the remaining games in the series, but they would not trail again in a game.
In his career, Gomes played for the Tampa Bay Rays, Cincinnati Reds, Washington Nationals, Oakland Athletics, Red Sox and Royals.
Given the number of teams he played for and his big personality demonstrated in the World Series Parade, it would not be at all surprising to see Gomes catch on as a commentator for either a national network or local broadcast team.
