Report: Dodgers’ Josh Ravin facing 80-game PED suspension

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

Another MLB player has tested positive for PED’s, as Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports is reporting that Los Angeles Dodgers relief pitcher Josh Ravin has been suspended for 80 games.

This is certainly strong evidence for anyone who feels that the current system is not enough of a deterrent.

Ravin is already the fifth player to receive an 80-game ban this year, joining Miami Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon, Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Chris Colabello, Cleveland Indians center fielder Abraham Almonte and Philadelphia Phillies relief pitcher Daniel Stumpf.

New York Mets reliever Jenrry Mejia also received a lifetime ban in February for a third positive test.

Ravin, who has missed the entire 2016 season thus far with an arm injury sustained in a car accident, will not be eligible to play until after the All-Star break. His suspension also disqualifies him for postseason eligibility in 2016.

How big of a loss this will be for the Dodgers is debatable. His 6.75 ERA and 1.821 WHIP in nine games and 9.1 innings pitched indicate that he won’t be greatly missed. Still, he struck out 12 hitters in those 9.1 innings and struck out 38 hitters in 28 innings with Triple-A Oklahoma City before that. Ravin is certainly capable of getting big outs in tough spots.

More importantly, the number of suspensions that have happened this year definitely signify that while the “Steroid Era” may be over, the issue is still a big one in the game.
