The Dallas Cowboys are in the process of building a new $1.5 billion practice facility in Frisco, Texas.
“The Star,” as it’s being called, will end up becoming the best practice facility in the National Football League with a price tag that’s higher than the cost of the equally stunning AT&T Stadium.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones knew full well what he was doing when coming to the determination that his team needed a new state-of-the-art facility. In addition to acting as a practice venue for local high schools, it promises to be an ideal location for major events around the sports world.
So it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that the Cowboys are discussing the possibility of hosting the 2018 draft with the National Football League.
“The Dallas Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones are attempting to show off their new world headquarters by hosting one of the biggest events on the NFL calendar. The franchise is in discussions with the NFL to host the 2018 NFL draft at The Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, a source confirmed Thursday. The proposal could also include using Arlington’s AT&T Stadium, or both facilities.”
With the draft unlikely to be held in Chicago for a third consecutive year, Denver, Canton and Los Angeles have all thrown their hats in the ring to host the annual event next year.
The whole idea for the NFL is to continually draw interest in the event by moving its location on a consistent basis after it was held in New York City for the past half century prior to Chicago hosting the event last year.
Always a savvy businessman, Jones knows full well that Frisco being able to host the event would be huge for both the new facility and the local community.
For the NFL, the idea of moving the draft to Texas in 2018 makes perfect sense. Capitalize on the state’s interest in football while giving publicity to what will be an absolutely awe-inspiring facility.
