Chipper Jones hasn’t ruled out managing Braves

If the Atlanta Braves were to come calling, Chipper Jones just might consider ditching retirement to come back to the dugout as manager of his old ball club.

Speaking with Atlanta’s 680-AM The Fan on Friday, Jones wasn’t tipping his hand. “No comment,” was his answer, via ALJ.com, when he was asked straight up if he had any interest in managing the Braves.

But he wouldn’t rule it out, either.

“Chipper said he has had conversations with his wife, Taylor, and gave her the same response, but has not ruled it out. ‘We’ll cross the bridge when it gets here,’ he offered.”

Funny enough, fired manager Fredi Gonzalez also came on to the show and threw his support behind Jones getting the job. His only stipulation is that he wants to be on Jones’ staff as a coach.

“We’ve discussed this before, I want to be your bullpen coach when you come up,” Gonzalez told Chipper.

The fact that Jones will not say, “no, I’m not taking the job” tells you all you need to know about his level of interest. Already a special consultant with the Braves, it’s not hard to imagine he’d be thrilled with the prospect of helping turn the organization around as the manager.

Chances are, the Braves would be happy to give him a few years at least to get the club back to winning, and he’d be a terrific face of the franchise as the team moves into its new stadium, SunTrust Park next season. Heck, he might even be more of a draw than a proposed zip line the Braves have considered adding to bolster the fan experience.
