Report: Jets offering Ryan Fitzpatrick more than $7-8 million

Previous reports that the New York Jets have offered Ryan Fitzpatrick a contract worth between $7-8 million appear to have been off the mark.

According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, he’s been offered more than that, though no exact figure was stated: “From what I understand, the offer is better than the $7 million-to-$8 million that is being reported, which means the low-ball perception isn’t quite accurate.”

Cimini also notes that the Jets’ offer isn’t based on cap space. Rather, their offer is based on how much they believe Fitzpatrick is worth.

Assuming for a moment that the offer is something like $10 million per year, Fitzpatrick would still be considered a bargain, based on his performance with Gang Green last year.

Quarterbacks like Sam Bradford and Brock Osweiler are getting $17-18 million per year, even though they’ve put up numbers that can’t come close to what Fitzpatrick logged in 2015.

Needless to say, it’s understandable that Fitzpatrick feels spurned right now. He passed for 3,905 yards last season with 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He also forged outstanding chemistry with receivers Brandon Marshall (who has many times expressed his desire to play once again with Fitzmagic in 2016) and Eric Decker.

But it appears the Jets (and teams around the NFL, for that matter) believe his success had more to do with his ability to play within offensive coordinator Chan Gailey’s system than it had to do with Fitzpatrick being awesome.

This has created a stalemate between the quarterback and the franchise. But in all honestly it should end soon. Fitzpatrick hasn’t had any luck getting the kind of money he wants in the open market, and the Jets have all the leverage at this point.
