Lakers granted permission to speak with Luke Walton

Luke Walton has at least one interested suitor, as the Los Angeles Lakers have expressed interest in the Golden State Warriors assistant.

The team asked for and was granted permission to interview him:

This is really a match made in Heaven.

Walton is naturally going to be one of the hottest head coaching commodities this offseason. He went 39-4 as the Warriors interim head coach to start the season when Steve Kerr was dealing with back issues.

Additionally, Walton was a Lakers player for nine seasons. He was drafted by the team in 2003 and remained there until the 2011-2012 season, when he was dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He also knows the front office well, as Mitch Kupchak was the Los Angeles general manager when Walton when drafted and throughout his entire career with the team.

Lastly, this is as close to a homecoming for Walton as the NBA has to offer. Walton was born in San Diego and graduated high school from the city’s University of San Diego High School.
