Cowboys drafting Dak Prescott is match made in NFL heaven

Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys landed their quarterback of the future by selecting Dak Prescott out of Mississippi State in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

A three-year starter for the Bulldogs, Prescott improved every year during his college days.

He possesses the innate physical tools to make all the big-boy plays at the quarterback position in the NFL as both a runner and a passer. He also performed at a high level against some of the toughest competition in college football, playing in the SEC.

Now he’ll head to Dallas to learn at the feet of one of the league’s top passers, and you know Romo’s not going to leave the young kid hanging. He’s going to pour every bit of knowledge he’s acquired over the years into Prescott, who will be a sponge.

Everyone who studied Prescott’s game this past year and prior to the draft realizes he’s not ready to be thrown to the wolves yet.  And that’s the beauty of this selection by the Cowboys. It’s a match made in heaven, as Presctott just oozes pro potential but won’t be under any pressure whatsoever to perform for the next few years.

You have to imagine the Jones family, head coach Jason Garrett and all the offensive coaches were ecstatic to land this kid.

At the risk of sounding overly dramatic, having Prescott sit behind Tony Romo, this has the potential to develop into a Joe Montana/Steve Young, Brett Favre/Aaron Rodgers situation for the ‘Boys in the years to come.

Romo recently said he has every intention of playing for another handful of years — a sentiment shared by Jones. Romo recently underwent surgery to strengthen his troublesome collarbone and said his back is as strong as it’s been in three or four years.

Nobody inside the building expects Prescott to be thrust into action any time soon. That’s a good thing.

Even if Romo were to be hurt, Dallas would be smart to have a veteran backup in place to take his spot — the last thing you want to do with a project quarterback is get them involved too early.

But assuming the vision plays out the way it has been drawn up, Dallas is in fantastic shape heading into the future. With Romo as the current franchise passer and Prescott as the quarterback of the future, Cowboys fans have a lot to cheer about right now.
