The San Francisco 49ers acquired the No. 28 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft from the Kansas City Chiefs. They used the pick to take Stanford guard Joshua Garnett.

To land the pick, the 49ers gave up a second, fourth, and sixth rounder in the 2016 draft to the Chiefs.
It’s certainly unusual to trade up for a guard, but it’s not unexpected for the 49ers. San Francisco had one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL last year and lost one of the few semi-competent players in free agency when guard Alex Boone signed with the Minnesota Vikings.
If he stays healthy, Garnett will likely be an immediate starter in San Francisco and with the possibly exception of left tackle Joe Staley is already the team’s best lineman.

It’s hard to acquire a more decorated lineman than Garnett, who was one of the best offensive linemen in the country during the 2015 season. He won the Morris Award for the Pac-12’s best offensive lineman, the Outland Trophy as the country’s best lineman, and was a consensus All-American.
