Mark Cuban: No trades are tempting to Mavericks

NBA teams are closing in on the 2016 trade deadline, but don’t expect the upstart Dallas Mavericks to make any moves.

Earl K. Sneed of the team’s official site notes owner Mark Cuban is content with the roster.

Dallas is currently the sixth-place team in the Western Conference, sporting a 28-22 record heading into the final stretch before the All-Star break.

However, the Mavericks are hardly comparable to the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder. Dallas is a combined 1-6 against the West’s elite trio, and the lone victory came against the Warriors when Stephen Curry and Harrison Barnes were sidelined.

With that being said, the snappy conclusion would be to demand the Mavericks execute a splashy move at the trade deadline (Feb. 19). Rudy Gay, Ryan Anderson, Jeff Teague and Markieff Morris highlight the list of players potentially on the move.

But one trade for an above-average talent won’t put Dallas on the same tier as the Dubs, Spurs and Thunder.

The Mavericks — like every other franchise — should be inquiring about available talents. Cuban’s club has no reason to chase a championship in 2015-16 and sacrifice success in future seasons.

Even if Dallas adds a high-profile trade target, the team will probably reach the postseason before bowing out within the first two rounds — likely after the first series. Golden State, San Antonio and Oklahoma City are simply on a different level than Western opponents.

By indirectly accepting that fate, the Mavericks won’t take on any expiring contracts and lose draft picks in the process. They’ll continue improving the roster once the offseason arrives and attempt to join the elite tier next year.

Patience can be boring, but that’s the smart decision for Dallas.
