Calvin Johnson has not informed Lions of his retirement decision

Despite reports that Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson told his family and coach Jim Caldwell that 2015 was his final year, president Rod Wood said that Megatron has yet to inform him of his final decision.

“It’s still in Calvin’s camp to make a decision. I talked to him on Monday,” Wood said, per Mike O’Hara of the Lions’ official website. “Bob Quinn (Lions GM) talked to him. Calvin has not made a decision. If he wants to come back, we’d love to have him back. If he decides to retire, we’re going to support that, too. He needs to decide what’s right for him. The worst thing we could do is put pressure on him.”

Wood indicated that March 9, the opening day of free agency and start of the new league year, is not a deadline for Johnson to make a decision.

Fans would surely love to see Johnson make a go of it for one more season. However, at 30, health preservation comes into factor. It is becoming quite common to see popular NFL players stepping down, especially after experiencing nagging injuries.

Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch presents a fine example of a player knowing when his body has taken enough hits and when it is time to walk away.

If Johnson does keep with his decision that 2015 was his final hurrah, the wide receiver will retire as one of the highest paid ever in his position.

Should he stick around, Johnson currently is engaged in a seven-year, $113.45 million deal that covers him through 2019, per Spotrac.com. However, if he does come back, there is a good chance he would sign a contract extension to lessen his cap hit for the upcoming season.
