Former Giants coach switched Super Bowl pick because Cam Newton wore MVP cleats

According to ex-New York Giants coach Jim Fassel, there was a time and a place for Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton to wear his gold MVP cleats. And Super Bowl warm-ups wasn’t it.

Speaking with Mile High Sports 1340, Fassel essentially blamed the Panthers’ loss on the gold cleats.

“All of the numbers pointed to Carolina. And when I saw Cam Newton walk out in gold shoes — ‘MVP’ — I switched my mind, essentially, right then. That’s not what a starting quarterback, MVP, leading his team — and I had a lot of respect for him during the season — that’s not what happens.’ You don’t do that. And I said, ‘This guy’s already become soft,’ and that’s what he was.”

This is completely silly considering Newton’s wild array of pregame cleats he sported throughout the season.

The bottom line is the Denver Broncos defense got the better of Newton, whose Panthers made one blaring mistake after another.

Obviously the Broncos were not intimidated by Newton showing off his MVP pregame cleats. In fact the Broncos may not have even noticed if they were focused on their own pregame warm-ups.

Despite a frighteningly terrible Super Bowl performance, Newton rightfully earned his MVP cleats for his stellar 2015 season. Fifteen regular season wins, 3,837 passing yards, 45 total touchdowns and only 10 interceptions pretty much gives Newton the right to wear whatever he likes whenever the mood strikes.
